When we were looking into dog grooming for the first time, only one place sprung to mind, and it did not disappoint. For the last few years we've used our own tools at home to help with grooming, but now the worried 'dog-Mum' that I am, let go and put my trust in someone else!
Sev and Lily were kindly invited for a wash and groom at our favourite pet shop, Doghouse, in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire
Last year Doghouse added 'Dogwash' to their newly renovated and relocated premises. 'Dogwash' is a a full grooming salon at the back of the very popular cafe and pet shop.
Sev and Lily have never been groomed professionally before, as a truly crazy dog Mum, it was always something I've worried about. Never wanting them to be clipped, and never wanting to lose their own "look" is really important. However things had to change.
Doghouse were so understanding that having your dog groomed for the first time, can be worrying. They were so helpful, and did an amazing job!
Both Severus and Lily have "fluffy" areas, this usually happens with spaniels when they're neutered. Generally it's been kept on top of it with grooming tools and brushes, but the fluff was getting out of hand and the dogs were turning into little bears!
From start to finish the team were so great; welcoming to Sev & Lily with treats and making them feel at ease with calming products to help relieve any stresses. Talking us through everything that was needed, and wanted, but also making me aware of usual procedures - for example clippers would be used under pads and with knots under armpits, as it's a lot kinder for the dogs. Otherwise the scissor clip & thinning were used a lot for the legs, as well as a mix of brushes helping with hand stripping to get the look of a smooth and beautiful spaniel.
My nerves of having your dog groomed for the first time, were put at ease, knowing that I was being listened to and understanding of how important it is.
Tips for having your dog groomed for the first time: A guide from a Nervous Dog Mum -Find a groomer you like, and get on with well, the trust will build from there.
-Have a look at previous work, especially if you'd like something more than just clipping.
-Be realistic, the groomers will be managing your exceptions on what can actually be achieved.
-Let them know what you want, be straight and honest, so they can do the best.
-Trust them. After all being a professional does count for something.
